Just for fun, here are some Valentine’s Day facts.

Richard Cadbury started the tradition of giving a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. His 19th century marketing campaign was so successful we still give chocolate today.

Doctors of the 1800’s often told patients to eat chocolate to calm themselves if they were pining for a lost love.

When Sir Rowland Hill started a postal service with the Penny Black in 1840 it made sending letters and cards much cheaper, with 400,000 Valentine’s cards being sent in the postal services first year.

During the middle ages, people in France & England believed that the start of mating season for birds was February 14th.

About 1 billion Valentines Day cards are sent each year, second only to Christmas.

In Finland, Valentine’s Day is called Ystavanpaiva which translates into “Friend’s Day”

In the Middle Ages, young people drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. The expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve” came from the custom to pin the name onto your sleeve for one week for everyone to see!

In 1537, Henry V11 declared February 14th the holiday of St Valentine.
