At Intelligent dialogue, we really believe that mindsets matter ; how we “feel” changes our emotional state which impacts our work, performance and our relationships.
We also know this is a complex area; the science of which is developing as we learn more about the human brain and how it functions.
Over the years, we’ve worked with thousands of sales people, and we’ve seen how essential a positive mindset is – how we feel about what we do and what we sell transmits into how we sell.
As Henry Ford put it so brilliantly, “whether you think you can or think you can’t you’re right”
In other words our mindsets matter.
When we came across this research by Dr Alia Crum, we had to share. It’s in the form of a Ted Talk, and in it she explains her research into how what we believe can affect stress, diet and exercise.
One of the most fascinating things she shares is her research which focused on 84 hotel maids. Being a chambermaid in a hotel is hard work, burning around 200 calories an hour. She asked this group of women if they exercised, and a percentage of them said they didn’t. They didn’t see their work as exercise. So she gave them a 15 minute presentation on the benefits of housework as a means of working out.
The effect of this presentation, in terms of a shift in thinking, had an impact. In the video she shares the impact in terms of weight, blood pressure, body fat% and job satisfaction.
Have a listen – it’s a short video which gets you thinking, and there are sub titles if you are reading this somewhere you can’t have the sound on.
